Frequently Asked Questions

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a frequent vaginal infection. It happens when some natural bacteria in the vagina grow too much. It’s a common reason for vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age.

Certain activities can disturb the sensitive pH balance of the vagina, leading to excessive growth of certain natural bacteria and raising the risk of BV. Examples are:

  • Multiple sexual partners.
  • Using sex toys.
  • Frequent vaginal washing/douching.
  • Prolonged or heavy periods causing vaginal bleeding.
  • Having a sexually transmitted infection.
  • Smoking.
  • Engaging in oral sex.
  • Hormonal shifts like puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.
  • Taking antibiotics.

Many women with Bacterial Vaginosis may not experience any symptoms and might not be aware of it.

When symptoms appear, the main one is vaginal discharge (thin white/gray with a ‘fishy’ smell). It could be heavier after sex or your period, and the odor might be stronger during sex.

Normally, it doesn’t lead to itching or soreness around the vagina, unless the discharge is very heavy.

BV doesn’t cause vaginal bleeding or strong pain. If you have these symptoms along with vaginal discharge, it’s crucial to quickly arrange for an in-person medical checkup.

For the first treatment, we can give you Metronidazole tablets. But if you’d rather have local treatment (vaginal cream), just let us know when you apply. We can then prescribe Dalacin (clindamycin cream) if it’s suitable for you.
