ADHD Assessment/Treatment for Adults – Consultation 2 of 3

Psychometry with a Psychologist

Our comprehensive adult ADHD assessment is a three-session multidisciplinary evaluation. Session 2 involves psychometric testing with a psychologist. Following this, a formal report is generated to provide clear clinical insights and a diagnostic foundation.

How the Dr.Online ADHD Assessment for Adults works

Dr.Online’s Full ADHD Assessment is composed of three consultations. Our process uses a multidisciplinary approach involving psychology, psychometrics, and psychiatry to thoroughly evaluate and diagnose Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults.

The initial two consultations are with a psychologist who gathers vital information through interviews, behavioural observations, and questionnaires. The subsequent consultation is with a collaborating psychiatrist, adding valuable insights, recommendations, and treatment options. This collaborative effort ensures a comprehensive and personalised approach for adults managing ADHD symptoms.

  • Initial Interview to gather patient history and symptoms
  • Questionnaires and rating scales are provided for self-assessment
  • Behavioural observation

  • Review of medical history, including previous diagnoses and family medical history
  • Discussion of ADHD symptoms observed by the patient or their family

  • Formal Diagnosis of ADHD type and severity;
  • Treatment discussion, including behavioural therapy or other options;

Our team’s psychiatrist will suggest and inform the patient and our concierge service to book future appointments such as:

  • Follow-up consultations (220€) for ongoing monitoring, adjustments and treatments;

These three consultations provide a comprehensive assessment and diagnostic process for ADHD, ensuring that the individual receives the most accurate diagnosis and a personalised treatment plan. Following the third consultation, an up-titration review is scheduled in 4 weeks, with an additional review typically conducted within 8 weeks, depending on the individual case. Once a patient is stable, follow-up appointments every 3 to 6 months are recommended, in line with clinical guidelines.

ADHD Assessment FAQs

Both psychologists and psychiatrists are qualified to diagnose and support those with ADHD. The Adult ADHD Assessment at Dr.Online involves both of these professionals. The initial two sessions are conducted by a clinical psychologist; if ADHD symptoms are identified, the Dr.Online Concierge Team will arrange a follow-up session with a psychiatrist.

ADHD manifests differently in adults than in children, as symptoms must be managed alongside the complex demands of adult life. These symptoms generally fall into two primary categories: Inattention and Hyperactivity/Impulsivity.

In adulthood, inattention often presents as difficulty managing the logistics of daily life. Key signs include:

  • Executive dysfunction: Difficulty organising tasks, managing time effectively, and maintaining an orderly workspace.
  • Focus and completion: Finding it hard to sustain concentration during long reports or conversations, often leading to unfinished projects despite an enthusiastic start.
  • Daily oversight: Frequently overlooking details, losing essential items (like keys or wallets), and forgetting appointments or deadlines.
  • Avoidance: A tendency to procrastinate or avoid tasks that require prolonged mental effort.

Physical hyperactivity often evolves into a more internalised experience for adults:

  • Restlessness: A persistent feeling of inner turmoil or an inability to relax, rather than overt running or climbing.
  • Impulsive behaviours: Making rash decisions or impulsive purchases without considering the long-term consequences.
  • Social impulsivity: Finishing others’ sentences, interrupting conversations, or talking excessively.
  • Impatience: Significant agitation when waiting in queues or for one’s turn.

If left unmanaged, these symptoms can lead to significant challenges in professional environments, strained personal relationships, and a persistent sense of low self-esteem.

Men are often diagnosed more frequently than women because they are more likely to display externalised symptoms, such as aggression, fluctuating emotions, and impulsive or high-risk behaviours.

In men, inattention often affects the ability to manage the logistics of daily life and work. Common signs include:

Distractibility: Getting sidetracked during conversations, even when being spoken to directly.
Disorganisation: Struggling to organise tasks or belongings and failing to follow sequential instructions.
Time management issues: Lacking time management skills and frequently missing deadlines or appointments.
Forgetfulness: Regularly forgetting daily responsibilities, such as paying bills, or losing essential items like keys and wallets.
Task completion: Starting projects with enthusiasm but leaving them incomplete, and avoiding work that requires sustained mental focus.

While physical hyperactivity may decrease with age, it often remains present in the following ways for men:

Restlessness: An inability to stay still for long periods or a constant feeling of being “on the move.”
Physical fidgeting: Tapping hands or feet, or frequently leaving one’s seat in situations where staying seated is expected (e.g., in meetings).
Social impulsivity: Talking excessively, blurting out answers before a question is finished, or interrupting others’ conversations and activities.
Impatience: Finding it very difficult to wait for their turn or stand in queues.

Women are less often diagnosed with ADHD than their male counterparts, frequently leading to underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis. Women tend to exhibit symptoms of inattention rather than physical hyperactivity; consequently, these signs are often mistaken for personality traits rather than a clinical disorder. Common symptoms include:

  • Internalised symptoms: Instead of outward hyperactivity, women may experience internal restlessness, which can often lead to anxiety or mood disturbances.
  • Perfectionism: To compensate for inattention, many women develop perfectionist tendencies, resulting in significant stress and burnout.
  • Chronic overwhelm: Balancing professional and domestic responsibilities can lead to a persistent feeling of being overwhelmed or “flooded.”
  • Emotional sensitivity: It is common for women with ADHD to experience heightened sensitivity to criticism and intense emotional responses.

Yes, we offer a range of ADHD treatments. Our specialists provide tailored support based on your individual needs and clinical requirements:

  • Clinical Psychologists: Our psychologists provide individual therapy sessions focused on developing coping strategies, improving organisational skills, and mastering time management. They also offer guidance and recommendations regarding lifestyle adjustments.
  • Psychiatrists: Our psychiatrists can evaluate your case and recommend a medical treatment plan. They provide the necessary clinical authorisations for you to fulfill at your local pharmacy.

Many ADHD symptoms overlap with other conditions like anxiety, depression, or thyroid issues. A formal assessment ensures that you are treating the root cause rather than just the symptoms. It helps distinguish between ADHD and “executive dysfunction” caused by other life factors.

An assessment allows specialists to create a bespoke plan that may include clinical guidance and medical management, and to provide a formal clinical report.

For many adults, a diagnosis helps reframe years of perceived “laziness” or “failure” as a manageable neurological difference. This shift is vital for reducing stigma, improving self-esteem, repairing relationships, preventing long-term complications, and risk behaviors, and more.
