ADHD Assessment for Children 2/3

Session 2: Psychometric Evaluation

Our ADHD Online Assessment features four comprehensive psychological tests during Session 2. With one conducted live online and three delivered via email, this 'pro-patient' format allows the child to complete evaluations without clinical time pressure

How the Dr.Online ADHD Assessment for Children works

Dr.Online’s Comprehensive ADHD Assessment consists of three targeted consultations. Our process utilizes a multidisciplinary approach, combining psychology and psychometrics, to provide the valuable insights and recommendations necessary for a personalised ADHD management plan.

A 3-Step Assessment Journey

Session 1: Clinical Interview. A detailed psychological interview to explore the child’s developmental history. During this session, the psychologist evaluates behavioural patterns and screens for potential genetic or somatic factors.

Session 2: Psychometric Evaluation. The child will complete four comprehensive psychological assessments. One is conducted live online, while the other three are sent via email. This ‘pro-patient’ format allows the child to complete the tests in a comfortable environment, eliminating the stress and tension often associated with time pressure.

To schedule this consultation, use the appointment calendar located at the top of this page.

Session 3: Diagnosis and Treatment Planning. In this final session, the child psychologist will discuss the results and provide a formal diagnosis. Within seven working days, a comprehensive written report will be issued and sent electronically. Furthermore, the psychologist will outline a tailored treatment plan and discuss potential therapy options with the parents.

The core features of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. While most children are energetic or distracted from time to time, ADHD symptoms are more persistent and severe. These signs typically appear before the age of 12, sometimes as early as three, and occur in multiple settings.

Symptoms are generally grouped into two categories, though many children experience a combination of both.

A child displaying a pattern of inattention may frequently:

  • Fail to pay close attention to detail or make careless mistakes in schoolwork.
  • Have trouble staying focused during tasks or while playing.
  • Seem as though they are not listening, even when spoken to directly.
  • Find it difficult to follow through on instructions, often failing to finish schoolwork or chores.
  • Struggle with organising tasks, activities, and time management.
  • Avoid or dislike tasks requiring sustained mental effort, such as homework.
  • Lose items necessary for tasks, such as pencils, school assignments, or toys.
  • Be easily distracted by external sights, sounds, or their own thoughts.
  • Be forgetful in daily activities and routine chores.

A child displaying a pattern of hyperactivity and impulsivity may frequently:

  • Fidget with their hands or feet, tap, or squirm in their seat.
  • Find it hard to remain seated in a classroom or other situations where staying put is expected.
  • Be constantly “on the go” or in perpetual motion.
  • Run around or climb things in situations where it is inappropriate.
  • Have difficulty playing or engaging in hobbies quietly.
  • Talk excessively.
  • Blurt out an answer before a question has been finished or interrupt the person speaking.
  • Find it very difficult to wait for their turn.
  • Intrude upon or interrupt others’ conversations, games, or activities.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder presents differently in every child and is categorised into three main types:

  • Predominantly Inattentive: Most symptoms relate to difficulty focusing, staying organised, and following instructions. Children with this type may often seem to be “daydreaming” or distracted.
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive: Most symptoms involve excessive physical movement, high energy levels, and acting without thinking. These children may find it particularly difficult to remain still or wait for their turn.
  • Combined: This is the most common form, where the child shows a significant mix of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

For children with mild to moderate ADHD, psychological intervention is often the first-line recommendation. Rather than attempting to “fix” the child, a psychologist works to provide both the child and their family with a “toolbox” of practical strategies to manage symptoms effectively.

Clinical pharmacological options are monitored by psychiatrists and are typically reserved for children with severe symptoms, or for those who have not found sufficient relief through psychological interventions alone. These clinical interventions are always intended to be used as part of a broader care plan that includes therapy and school-based support, rather than as a standalone solution.

A formal ADHD assessment is a vital step in understanding a child’s unique developmental profile. Rather than just providing a label, it serves as a foundation for effective support and long-term wellbeing.

Validating the Child’s Experience: For the child, an assessment provides a helpful explanation for why they may find certain tasks more difficult than their peers. Moving away from harmful labels such as “naughty” or “lazy” and towards a neurological understanding helps to protect the child’s self-esteem and mental health. It allows them to understand that their brain simply works differently.

Tailored Treatment and Strategies: Every child’s experience with ADHD is unique. An assessment identifies a child’s specific strengths and challenges, allowing psychologists to build a “toolbox” of practical strategies that are directly relevant to that individual. This ensures that interventions at home and at school are targeted and effective.

A Comprehensive Care Plan: An assessment also helps to identify if other co-occurring conditions are present, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, or anxiety. By understanding the full picture of a child’s needs, parents and professionals can ensure that the resulting care plan is comprehensive and that no underlying struggle is overlooked.
