How a Dr.Online psychologist can help you

Our clinical psychologists are equipped to support you across a broad spectrum of mental health challenges. By providing a clinical perspective on your symptoms, they help you move beyond simple management to achieve a deeper understanding of your well-being. Below are the primary areas where our evidence-based therapies can facilitate meaningful change:

Anxiety disorders: Common conditions involving excessive worry or fear that impacts daily life. A clinical psychologist uses evidence-based therapies to help individuals manage anxious behaviours and develop effective coping strategies.

Mood disorders: Persistent emotional disturbances, such as prolonged sadness or irritability, that affect work and relationships. Support focuses on regulating mood and challenging unhelpful thought patterns.

Burnout: Emotional and physical exhaustion caused by chronic stress or work-related pressures. Psychological intervention helps identify triggers, manage stress, and restore a healthy life balance.

Somatic disorders: Physical symptoms linked to emotional distress that lack a full medical explanation. Therapy addresses the underlying psychological factors to reduce the impact on the body.

Loss and complicated bereavement: Intense, disruptive mourning that impairs functioning beyond the natural grieving process. Psychologists provide a safe space to process loss and rebuild daily stability.

Toxic and behavioural addictions: Compulsive habits or substance use that disrupt well-being. Treatment involves structured therapy to manage cravings, strengthen motivation, and prevent relapse.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): A cycle of persistent, intrusive thoughts and repetitive compulsions. Clinical psychologists use targeted treatments to help individuals reduce these behaviours and manage intrusive thoughts.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): Distressing symptoms, such as flashbacks or hypervigilance, following a traumatic event. Trauma-focused therapies, including CBT and EMDR, help individuals regain a sense of safety.

Personality disorders: Rigid, enduring patterns of thinking and behaving that cause relational difficulties. Therapy focuses on emotional regulation and developing healthier ways of relating to oneself and others.

A clinical psychologist is a trained mental health expert who specialises in understanding the root causes of emotional distress and providing personalised strategies for healing. They take into account your unique history, genetics, family background, and coping patterns to design a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Through evidence-based psychological therapies, clinical psychologists help clients manage symptoms, build resilience, and achieve lasting recovery. Whether you’re struggling with overwhelming stress, persistent sadness, or difficulties in relationships, consultations with a clinical psychologist can offer guidance, support, and practical tools to improve your mental well-being and quality of life.

No. Clinical psychologists are not medical doctors, so they do not conduct medical or pharmacological treatments. Instead, clinical psychologists specialise in talk therapy, which involves a structured and confidential process where a person speaks with a trained professional to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

The HSE emphasises that talk therapy—or psychotherapy—is an evidence-based approach designed to help individuals understand the root causes of their distress and develop healthier coping mechanisms for the future.

While both professionals are experts in mental health and often work together within a multidisciplinary team, their training and methods differ significantly.

A psychiatrist holds a medical degree, such as an MB BCh BAO or equivalent, followed by specialist psychiatric training. This medical background allows them to authorise and oversee pharmacological treatments and focus on the biological, chemical, and physical aspects of mental health. They often specialise in clinical stabilisation and the management of medical treatments.

In contrast, a psychologist is not a medical doctor and cannot authorise medical treatments. They hold advanced university degrees, such as a Masters or Doctorate in Psychology, and focus on behavioural patterns, emotional processing, and talk therapies.

Despite these differences, both roles share the goal of understanding how the brain works and how you think and behave. They frequently collaborate to help you develop helpful ways of thinking and behaving to provide the best possible outcome for your health.
