A clinical psychologist is a trained mental health expert who specialises in understanding the root causes of emotional distress and providing personalised strategies for healing. They take into account your unique history, genetics, family background, and coping patterns to design a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Through evidence-based psychological therapies, clinical psychologists help clients manage symptoms, build resilience, and achieve lasting recovery. Whether you’re struggling with overwhelming stress, persistent sadness, or difficulties in relationships, consultations with a clinical psychologist can offer guidance, support, and practical tools to improve your mental well-being and quality of life.

No. Clinical psychologists are not medical doctors, so they do not conduct medical or pharmacological treatments. Instead, clinical psychologists specialise in talk therapy, which involves a structured and confidential process where a person speaks with a trained professional to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

The HSE emphasises that talk therapy—or psychotherapy—is an evidence-based approach designed to help individuals understand the root causes of their distress and develop healthier coping mechanisms for the future.

While both professionals are experts in mental health and often work together within a multidisciplinary team, their training and methods differ significantly.

A psychiatrist holds a medical degree, such as an MB BCh BAO or equivalent, followed by specialist psychiatric training. This medical background allows them to authorise and oversee pharmacological treatments and focus on the biological, chemical, and physical aspects of mental health. They often specialise in clinical stabilisation and the management of medical treatments.

In contrast, a psychologist is not a medical doctor and cannot authorise medical treatments. They hold advanced university degrees, such as a Masters or Doctorate in Psychology, and focus on behavioural patterns, emotional processing, and talk therapies.

Despite these differences, both roles share the goal of understanding how the brain works and how you think and behave. They frequently collaborate to help you develop helpful ways of thinking and behaving to provide the best possible outcome for your health.
