While the situation has raised concern due to the speed and severity of some cases, health experts emphasise that meningitis remains rare, even in the context of this outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>According to recent reporting, clusters like this, often linked to close-contact environments such as universities, can appear alarming, but they do not reflect widespread risk across the population. Instead, they highlight how specific settings can temporarily increase transmission, while overall incidence remains low.<\/p>\n<p>In Ireland, meningococcal disease is monitored each year by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hpsc.ie\/\">Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC)<\/a>. Cases are recorded annually, but numbers remain relatively low, and there is no indication of a national outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-is-norovirus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is meningitis?<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It often starts as small red or purplish spots that can spread and become darker, sometimes resembling bruises.<\/p>\n<p>One way to check the rash is the glass test: press the side of a clear glass firmly against the skin. If the rash does not fade or turn pale under pressure, this is known as a non-blanching rash.<\/p>\n<p>This happens because the infection can damage small blood vessels, leading to bleeding under the skin. When this occurs, the spots do not disappear with pressure, which is why it can be a sign of a serious infection requiring urgent medical attention.<\/p>\n<p>However, not everyone with meningitis develops a rash, and it may appear later in the illness. For that reason, you should never wait for a rash to appear before seeking help if other symptoms, such as fever, headache, neck stiffness, or confusion, are present.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the preventive measures?<\/h2>\n<p>While it is not always possible to prevent meningitis, there are effective ways to reduce the risk. Vaccination is the most important protection against common types of meningococcal disease.
