Hay Fever Treatment

Hay Fever, also known as seasonal rhinitis, is a prevalent allergic response to pollen, often triggered during the spring and summer months.

Common symptoms of Hay Fever include:

• Sneezing.
• A runny or congested nose.
• Itchy, watery, and red eyes.
• A tickly or itchy throat.
• For individuals with asthma, their symptoms may worsen, leading to wheezing and breathlessness.

In cases where individuals are allergic to other substances like dust mites, animal fur, or mold, these symptoms can occur throughout the year, and this condition is referred to as allergic rhinitis.

In appropriate medical situations, we can prescribe antihistamine tablets and steroid nasal sprays to manage allergy symptoms effectively.

Antihistamine tablets work by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical released by the body in response to allergens. By doing so, they help to reduce the severity of the allergic reaction and alleviate associated symptoms.

Steroid nasal sprays are effective in calming inflammation in the nasal passages caused by allergens.

For cases where symptoms persist despite using steroid nasal sprays, a combination nasal spray containing both a steroid and an antihistamine can be recommended to provide better control over the allergy symptoms.

Antihistamine tablets are generally well-tolerated but they can cause drowsiness in some patients. To reduce any potential effects of this, take this medication at night.

If you do experience drowsiness, do not drive or operate machinery- it is not safe!

Other potential side effects include dizziness, nausea and headache.

Side effects of steroid nasal sprays are usually localised and include nose bleeds, irritation/ soreness in the nostrils or throat, headaches and an unpleasant taste in your mouth.

Please note, Dymista may have some influence on your ability to drive and operate heavy machinery. This effect can be enhanced by alcohol. Be careful until you are aware of how this medication affects you.
