Frequently Asked Questions

Candidiasis, also known as thrush, is a prevalent opportunistic fungal infection. While thrush is generally not considered serious, it can cause highly uncomfortable symptoms. This condition commonly affects women, leading to vaginal thrush, but it can also affect men, causing penile thrush.

Thrush is a condition caused by the Candida fungus, is usually harmless as this fungus naturally exists in the body without causing any issues. However, under certain circumstances, an imbalance in the coexisting natural bacteria can lead to an overgrowth of Candida, resulting in an infection.

Several factors can increase the risk of developing genital thrush, including:

  • Taking antibiotics.
  • Experiencing hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy, menstrual cycles, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), or while using contraceptive pills.
  • Having a weakened immune system.
  • Suffering from diabetes.

To reduce the likelihood of vaginal thrush, consider the following preventive measures:

  • Refrain from using soaps or shower gels to clean the vaginal area.
  • Avoid using douches and deodorants on the vagina.
  • Opt for loose-fitting clothing instead of tight-fitting garments like tights.
  • Choose breathable, cotton underwear over synthetic materials.
  • Avoid wearing underwear while sleeping.

Thrush is not categorized as a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and is not commonly considered contagious. While it is rare for thrush to be transmitted during sexual activity, engaging in sex can potentially trigger a thrush infection and prolong its symptoms. It is advisable to abstain from sexual activity during treatment and until all symptoms have completely resolved to promote a smoother recovery process.
